SAVANNAH, Ga. - Armstrong State University volleyball celebrated Senior Day on Saturday with a 3-0 Peach Belt Conference victory over visiting Francis Marion University at the Pirates Athletic Center. Set scores were: 25-17, 25-21, 25-17.
The win was the fifth straight for the Pirates, who moved to 22-6 overall and 12-5 in the Peach Belt with the win. Francis Marion falls to 15-12 overall and 9-9 in the PBC with the loss. Armstrong State will play its final match of the regular season on Monday, hosting Georgia College at 6 p.m. in a match rescheduled from Hurricane Matthew.
Francis Marion started off the first set on a 10-4 run, thanks to a big service run by the Patriots' Caroline Boone, but the Pirates scored eight of the next nine points to take a 12-11 lead and eventually win the set, 25-17. Armstrong State held the Patriots to just nine kills in each of the three sets and closed out the match by starting the third set on a 10-1 run en route to the 25-17 win and the sweep.
The Pirates were led on the day by sophomore Raquel Kulak's nine kills, while four players - Raegan Grooms, Autumn Mayo and seniors Rachel Thompson and Kim Brody - notched eight kills. Thompson hit .500 in the match while sophomore Carley Eiken delivered 35 assists and junior Iva Scepanovic tallied 23 digs. Sophomore Kristi Vaughn added four service aces.
Francis Marion was led by Georgia Garrison's match-high 10 kills, Kaitlyn Ziegelmaier's 23 assists and Natalie Vaughn's 11 digs.
Before the match, the Pirates honored their three seniors - fifht-year seniors Brody and Thompson, as well as Brittany Hereth - in a pre-match ceremony.
