SAVANNAH, Ga. - No. 8-ranked Lynn University handed the No. 3-ranked Armstrong State University men's tennis team its first defeat of the 2017 season, picking up a 5-1 win over the Patriots on Saturday afternoon at the Armstrong Tennis Complex.
The Knights improved to 3-2 on the season with the win, while Armstrong State falls to 3-1. The Pirates return to action on Sunday, hosting No. 2 Saint Leo at Noon.
Lynn got out to a quick start, sweeping all three doubles matches from the Pirates. Kay Bartmann and Jakub Jiricka defeated the No. 5-ranked duo of Alberto Caceres Casas and Jan Porteset, 9-7, at No. 1 doubles while Florian Clemares and Mehdi Laalej downed Lorenzo Camilli and Luca Cerin, 8-4, at No. 2 doubles. Jean-Baptiste Mateo and Jose Porfirio finished off the doubles sweep with an 8-6 win over Ignacio Hernandez and Alvaro Cruz Chomorro at No. 3 doubles.
No. 4-ranked Caceres Casas got a point for the Pirates in singles play with a 6-0, 6-4 win over Clemares at No. 3 singles, but Laalej defeated Bjorn Kurtze, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 1 singles and No. 19-ranked Mateo downed Porteset, 6-0, 6-2, at No. 2 singles to clinch the match for the Knights. The other singles matches were halted in progress.
