SUMTER, S.C. - Sophomore Alberto Caceres Casas outlasted teammate Ignacio Hernandez in a thrilling three-set match to highlight Armstrong State University men's tennis action at the ITA Southeast Regionals on Sunday at the Palmetto Tennis Center in Sumter, S.C.
Playing in the quarterfinals, the unseeded Caceres beat the fourth-seeded Hernandez, 1-6, 6-4, 7-6 (12-10), to advance to the semifinals on Monday. Both players advanced to the quarterfinals on Sunday after picking up Round of 16 wins - Hernandez defeated No. 9-16 seeded Pedro Ecenarro of Georgia College, 6-2, 7-5, while Caceres beat No. 5-8 seeded Jannik Kumbier of Georgia College, 6-2, 6-4.
Caceres will face North Georgia's Alex Reinauer at 10:00 a.m. on Monday in the semifinal.
In doubles action, Caceres teamed with junior Jan Porteset to advance to the doubles final, defeating Andre R. Canino and Lukas Mortizen of North Georgia, 8-6. The top-seeded pair will take on fellow Pirates in an all-Armstrong State final as senior Luca Cerin and Hernandez, seeded fifth, upended the fourth-seeded duo of Reinauer and Niklas Zielen of North Georgia, 8-3.
The doubles final will take place at 8:00 a.m. on Monday.
The winners of the singles and doubles brackets of the ITA Southeast Regionals advance to the ITA Small College Championships in Surprise, Ariz., on October 13-16.
