AUGUSTA, Ga. - Augusta University used a five-run fourth inning to capture a 9-4 Peach Belt Conference baseball victory over visiting Armstrong State University on Friday evening at Lake Olmstead Stadium in Augusta, Ga.
The Jaguars (11-14, 5-8 PBC) snapped a three-game losing streak with the win, while Armstrong State fell to 14-12 overall and 0-7 in the PBC with the loss. The two teams will wrap up their three-game Peach Belt Conference series with a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday.
Augusta scored single runs in the first and third innings to take a 2-0 lead. Cole Janousek and Clint Hardy delivered RBI singles, respectively, for the Jaguars.
The fourth inning proved to be the pivotal inning as Augusta got a sacrifice fly by Brent Alford, an RBI single by Cody Lanford and then a three-run home run from Hardy to plate five in the inning and build a 7-0 run.
The Pirates got on the board in the top of the fifth inning on sophomore Stetson Smith's sacrifice fly. Carrington Evans got the run back for the Jaguars in the seventh on an RBI single, but the Pirates plated three runs in the top of the eighth inning - two on junior Chandler Corley's two-run home run - to cut the lead to 9-4.
Tristan Jones (4-3) picked up the win for the Jaguars, giving up eight hits and one run in six innings of work, walking one while striking out three. Sophomore Sam Goberdhan (3-2) took the loss for the Pirates, giving up 13 hits and nine runs - eight earned - in 6 1/3 innings of work, walking two and striking out two.
Corley and junior Mike Warren had two hits apiece to lead the Pirates at the plate, while Tyler Roberts and Evans each had three hits for the Jaguars.
