AMERICUS, Ga. - The Armstrong Atlantic State University baseball squad split a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at Georgia Southwestern State University. The Pirates took game one, 6-3, but the Hurricanes won the nightcap, 9-0.
With the split, the Pirates move to 8-3 overall and 2-3 in the Peach Belt, while Georgia Southwestern moves to 5-8 overall and 2-3 in the league. The third game of the series was cancelled on Saturday, leaving the series as a split between the two teams.
Georgia Southwestern scored twice in the bottom of the fifth inning on RBI doubles by Jerrod Taylor and Neal Chambless.
Chris Base was masterful in the complete-game win, limiting the Hurricanes to six hits and three runs - two earned - while walking one and striking out four to improve to 2-0 on the season.
Frank Ambrosino (0-2) took the loss for the Hurricanes, giving up seven hits and four runs - three earned - in seven innings of work, walking one while striking out three.
Chase Butler paced the Pirates offensively in game one, going 2-for-5 with two RBIs.
In game two, the Hurricanes' Matthew Suggs (2-1) hurled a seven-hit shutout, striking out six to earn the split for Georgia Southwestern.
The Hurricanes built a 2-0 lead with single runs in the second and fifth innings, then sent 11 men to the plate in a seven-run seventh inning to clinch the victory.
Miller had three hits to pace the Pirates in game two, while John Duran, Michael Coffey and Corey Benson had two hits apiece for Georgia Southwestern in the second game.
