FLORENCE, S.C. - The Armstrong State University volleyball squad rebounded from its first Peach Belt Conference loss to defeat UNC Pembroke, 3-0, on Saturday in a match played on the campus of Francis Marion University on Saturday afternoon in Florence, S.C. Set scores were: 25-23, 25-17, 26-24.
The match pitted two Peach Belt schools who have yet to be able to play a home match since the onset of Hurricane Matthew a week ago. Originally scheduled for play at UNCP, Francis Marion agreed to host the match prior to their contest against Flagler this afternoon.
With the win, Armstrong State improves to 15-2 overall and 5-1 in the Peach Belt Conference. UNC Pembroke falls to 2-19 overall and 0-10 in the PBC with the loss.
UNC Pembroke opened up the first set on a 9-5 run and led by seven points, 14-7, midway through the set. The Pirates scored seven of the next eight points, and closed out the set with back-to-back kills by sophomore Raegan Grooms for the 25-23 win.
The Pirates held the Braves to an -.075 hitting percentage in taking set number two, then held a six-point lead in set three before UNCP rallied to tie the set at 24-all. A kill by sophomore Madison Sox and a service ace by Grooms finished off the set and the match for Armstrong State.
Senior Rachel Thompson paced the Pirates offensively with 10 kills, adding four blocks, while Grooms and Brody each had nine kills. Sophomore Carley Eiken tallied 32 assists while junior Iva Scepanovic had 22 digs, four assists and a pair of service aces.
UNC Pembroke was led by Caroline Pridgen's eight kills, Bailee Jones' 13 assists and Cayce Bell's 15 digs.
Armstrong State returns to action on Friday, October 21st, visiting Lander for a 7:00 p.m. Peach Belt Conference contest against the Bearcats.
