FLORENCE, S.C. - The No. 4-ranked and second-seeded Armstrong State University women's tennis team advanced to the 2017 Peach Belt Conference Championship match with a 5-3 win over No. 8-ranked and third-seeded Flagler College on Saturday afternoon at the Dr. Eddie Floyd Tennis Center in Florence, S.C.
The Pirates (22-3) will advance to face top-seeded and fifth-ranked Columbus State at 9:00 a.m. on Sunday. Flagler falls to 19-4 on the season with the loss. The Pirates have won the last 13 Peach Belt Conference tournament titles, dating back to 2004.
Armstrong State won two of three doubles matches to take a 2-1 lead heading into singles play. The No. 3-ranked duo of Lena Lutzeier and Diana Stomlega defeated Lizanne Jinkertz and Patrycja Maslanka, 8-3, at No. 1 doubles, while Alice Patch and Tamri Chalaganidze downed Felicitas Runkel and Hilary Hanton, 8-3, at No. 3 doubles. Flagler's Kelly Burge and Mary Jo Nanti defeated Tatjana Stoll and Lenka Styblova, 8-2, at No. 2 doubles.
In singles play, No. 5-ranked Lutzeier picked up a quick 6-1, 6-2 win over Nanti at No. 1 singles. No. 22-ranked Stomlega beat Burge, 6-4, 6-0, at No. 3 singles, but Flagler's Maslanka downed Patch, 6-4, 6-3, at No. 4 singles and No. 39-ranked Jinkertz beat No. 17-ranked Stoll, 6-3, 6-4, at No. 2 singles to make the team score 4-3.
The Pirates clinched the match with Chalaganidze at No. 5 singles with her 6-3, 6-4 win over Runkel.
