SAVANNAH, Ga. - The top-ranked and two-time defending NCAA Division II national champion Armstrong State University women's tennis team picked up a 5-1 win over No. 14 Valdosta State on Sunday afternoon.
The Pirates moved to 12-2 on the season with the win, while Valdosta State fell to 5-5 on the year. Armstrong State returns to action on Monday, taking on No. 7 West Florida at 10:00 a.m. at the Armstrong Tennis Complex.
Armstrong State won two of three doubles matches to take a 2-1 lead heading into singles play. The No. 2-ranked duo of Lena Lutzeier and Diana Stomlega defeated Bea Morales Hernandez and Anke Poncelet, 8-4, at No. 1 doubles, while Tamri Chalaganidze and Alice Patch downed Daniela Barta and Anja Coksa, 8-3, at No. 2 doubles. Valdosta State picked up a win at No. 3 doubles as Laura Ubeda and Estes Widdershoven downed Paula Boixader Roca and Tatjana Stoll, 8-6.
The Pirates then won three singles matches in straight sets to clinch the match. No. 11-ranked Lutzeier bested No. 17-ranked Hernandez, 6-3, 6-1, at No. 1 singles, while No. 13-ranked Stomlega defeated Sabrina Schmidt, 6-0, 6-2, at No. 4 singles. Chalaganidze picked up a 6-1, 6-1 win over Poncelet at No. 5 singles. The other singles matches were not finished after the match was clinched.
