BERKELEY, Calif. - The Armstrong Atlantic State University women's tennis team fared well in the first day of action as the only Division II school at the Cal Nike Invitational on Friday, hosted by California.
The Pirates' six players split singles play through three different brackets while winning one of three doubles matches in Friday's play.
In the Gold singles bracket, the Pirates placed two players in the Quarterfinals as senior Barbora Krtickova defeated Santa Clara's Danielle Silva, 6-0, 6-4, then upset bracket No. 2 seed Nicolette Tran of BYU, 6-2, 6-2. She is joined in the quarters by senior Marlen Hacke, who beat No. 3 seed Jade Frampton of St. Mary's, 6-4, 6-1, and Morgan Anderson of BYU, 6-1, 6-2.
In the White singles bracket, senior Olga Kalodzitsa is into the quarters after receiving a first-round bye, then defeating St. Mary's Liz Searl, 6-1, 6-2. Freshman Dora Andrejszki dropped her first-round match to Sacramento State's Jennifer Nguyen, 6-3, 7-5 and received a walkover in her consolation match.
In the Blue singles bracket, junior Clara Perez lost to sixth-seeded Klara Fabikova of California, 6-2, 6-2, but rebounded to defeat UC Davis' Layla Sanders, 6-2, 6-1, in her consolation match. Senior Aleksandra Filipovski lost to fifth-seeded Jenny Jullien of St. Mary's, 6-0, 6-3, and lost a consolation match to Jan Jose State's Sabi Leon-Chao, 6-4, 7-6 (7).
Doubles action saw the duo of Hacke and Kalodzitsa pick up an 8-5 win over Cal's Kelly Chui and San Francisco's MilHadzi-Tanovic in the Gold doubles bracket. In the Blue doubles bracket, the duo of Filipovski and Krtickova lost to Santa Clara's Silva and Le, 8-3, and in the White doubles bracket, Andrejzski and Perez lost to Fresno's Sofya Malyshava and Nevada's Monika Magusiak, 8-7 (4).
