FLORENCE, S.C. - The top-ranked and top-seeded Armstrong Atlantic State University women's tennis team advanced to the 2013 Peach Belt Conference tournament finals with a 5-0 win over fifth-seeded Georgia College on Saturday morning at the Dr. Eddie Floyd Florence Tennis Center in Florence, S.C.
The Pirates (22-1) will face second-seeded Columbus State on Sunday at 8:00 a.m. for the tournament title, which would be a 10th straight title for Armstrong. Georgia College (15-9) will play in the third-place match on Sunday against third-seeded Francis Marion.
Armstrong won all three doubles matches to take a 3-0 lead into singles play. The No. 2-ranked duo of Aleksandra Filipovski and Barbora Krtickova beat Kayla Barksdale and Katie Krupp, 8-1, at No. 1 doubles, while the No. 6-ranked duo of Marlen Hacke and Olga Kalodzitsa beat Ivana Marevic and May Johnson, 8-4, at No. 2 doubles. Clara Perez and Natasa Vukovic finished off the doubles sweep with an 8-2 win over Michelle Lingner and Sarah Murray.
The Pirates then got a pair of straight-set singles wins to clinch the berth into the finals. No. 11-ranked Hacke beat Krupp, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 4 singles, then No. 23-ranked Kalodzitsa downed Lingner, 6-2, 6-0, at No. 5 singles.
The Pirates have advanced to the finals in each PBC Tournament since the league abandoned the flighted tournament format after the 1999 season. Armstrong has won 18 of 21 tournament titles in league history and has won 11 of 13 tournaments since the team format was adopted in 2000.
