AIKEN, S.C. - The top-ranked and defending NCAA Division II national champion Armstrong Atlantic State University women's tennis team opened up the 2013 spring season with a 9-0 blanking of No. 44-ranked USC Aiken on Wednesday afternoon at the USC Aiken Tennis Complex.
The Pirates (1-0, 1-0 PBC) swept all three singles matches and collected straight-set singles wins in all six singles matches to knock off the Pacers (1-1, 0-1 PBC).
Doubles play began with the Pirates' duo of junior Marlen Hacke and senior Jessica Gardefjord picking up an 8-0 win over Caitlyn Lawrence and Julia Arruda at No. 3 doubles. The duo of sophomore Clara Perez and freshman Natasha Vukovic collected an 8-3 win over Giovanna Ramos and Franziska Regel at No. 2 doubles, with the top-ranked duo of juniors Aleksandra Filipovski and Barbora Krtickova completing the doubles sweep with an 8-4 win over Margot Simon and Shauna Williams at No. 1 doubles.
The Pirates then captured all six singles matches for the victory. No. 2-ranked Krtickova claimed a 6-2, 6-2 win over Simon at No. 1 singles, while No. 8-ranked Filipovski downed Ramos, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 2 singles. No. 14-ranked Hacke defeated Arruda, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 3 singles and No. 33-ranked Perez bested Williams, 6-0, 6-3, at No. 4 singles.
Vukovic claimed a 6-2, 6-2 win over Regel at No. 5 singles and Gardefjord completed the singles sweep with a 6-0, 6-0 blanking of Lawrence at No. 6 singles.
Armstrong returns to action on Friday, February 8, hosting Division I foe Kennesaw State University at 2:00 p.m. at Bacon Park.
