SUMTER, S.C. - Armstrong Atlantic State University sophomore Barbora Krtickova claimed the ITA Southeast Region singles title on Monday, beating a pair of Pirate teammates at the Palmetto Tennis Center in Sumter, S.C., en route to the school's seventh straight region singles title.
Krtickova, the top seed in the bracket, began the day with a 6-2, 6-2 win over teammate and No. 9-16 seed Marlen Hacke in the semifinals. Second-seeded Aleksandra Filipovski, meanwhile, outlasted third-seeded Jitka Gavdunova of Francis Marion, 6-2, 3-6, 6-2, to set up the 1 vs. 2 teammate showdown for the region title.
The singles final lasted three sets, but Krtickova prevailed, 2-6, 6-2, 6-3, over Filipovski to earn the berth into the ITA Small College National Championships, which will take place on Oct. 13-16 in Mobile, Ala.
Armstrong has boasted the last seven straight ITA Southeast Region women's singles title, stretching back to Iuliia Stupak (2005, 2006), Johanna Dahlback (2007), Sona Novakova (2008, 2009) and Alida Muller-Wehlau (2010). Krtickova will attempt to follow in the footsteps of Muller-Wehlau (2010), Novakova (2009), Dahlback (2007) and Zsofia Golopencza (2003) as ITA "Super Bowl" singles titlists.
The Pirates will also add a doubles region title as well when Filipovski and Krtickova take on teammates Kathleen Henry and Clara Perez for the ITA Southeast Region crown on Tuesday afternoon, to be played at Armstrong.
