SAVANNAH, Ga. - Armstrong Atlantic State University junior Taylor Russell has been named the Peach Belt Conference's women's soccer Defender of the Week, while sophomore goalkeeper Morgan Luckie has been named the Goalkeeper of the Week with the release of the league's weekly honors on Monday.
Russell played all 180 minutes at center back in No. 17 Armstrong's two shutout wins on the week, locking up the No. 3 seed for the Pirates in the upcoming PBC Tournament. The sophomore took five shots, one on goal, and helped hold Flagler to just seven shots in a 1-0 win over the Saints on Wednesday. Russell had another shot on goal and helped hold Lander to 11 shots in a 2-0 win on Saturday as Armstrong handed the Bearcats their first road loss of the season. With the Marietta, Ga., native leading the back line, Armstrong has now strung together a scoreless streak of 427 minutes and 18 seconds dating back to Oct. 23.
Luckie, meanwhile, delivered a pair of shutouts for the No. 17-ranked Pirates on the week. She made a pair of saves in Armstrong's 2-0 win over Flagler on Wednesday, then outdueled Lander's Katie Lyle by making eight saves in Saturday's 2-0 win over Lander. The Charlotte, N.C., native now leads the PBC in goals against average (0.67) and has six shutouts on the season.
This is the second time this season that Russell and Luckie have earned the league's weekly accolades as both were honored on September 6th.
Armstrong opens action in the 2013 Peach Belt Conference Championships on Tuesday hosting Georgia College in a 2:00 p.m. contest at the Armstrong Soccer Field.
