Birch, Sammarco Earn All-Peach Belt Conference Women's Golf Honors

PINE MOUNTAIN, Ga. - The Armstrong Atlantic State University women's golf team placed a pair of players on the 2012 All-Conference team, announced Sunday evening at the league's annual awards banquet prior to the Peach Belt Conference Golf Championships at Callaway Gardens. Sophomore Jenna Birch earned first-team honors while sophomore Kristen Sammarco earned second-team honors.
Birch is Armstrong's first first-team All-Conference honoree as the Fleetwood, England, native led the Peach Belt in stroke average this season at 76.15 in 13 rounds of action. She finished in the top 5 in three of her six events this spring, capturing the Newberry College Invitational in February and finishing runner-up at the Armstrong Pirate Women's Invitational as well as the Division I Marsh Landing Intercollegiate.
Sammarco, meanwhile, was sixth in the league in stroke average at 78.43 in 14 rounds of action, finishing in teh top 10 in three events and capturing the Kiawah Island Intercollegiate in February. She was the runner-up to Birch at the Newberry College Invitational and was leading the Armstrong Pirate Invitational before an illness forced her to withdraw.
This is the first year in which Armstrong has had multiple All-Conference honorees in women's golf after the league started sponsoring a championship in the sport in 2009-10.
The Pirates begin action in the 2012 Peach Belt Conference Championships on Monday at the Callway Gardens Mountain View course with tee times beginning at 10:50 a.m.
