
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Armstrong Atlantic State women's golf team shot a school-record round of 315 on Tuesday, moving up two spots to finish tied for eighth at the LRC/Myrtle Beach Intercollegiate on Tuesday at the Meadowlands Golf Club.
AASU's round bests the previous school record of 325, set twice previously - on Sept. 15, 2008, at the Pfeiffer Lady Falcon Invitational and on March 5, 2007, at the SCAD Spring Invitational. The Lady Pirates finished the tournament with a two-day 665 total, tied with Catawba.
First-round leader Newberry shot a 299 on Tuesday and finished with a 611 total, winning the tournament by 13 strokes over Wingate (624). Lincoln Memorial and UNC Pembroke (630) tied for third, with host Lenoir-Rhyne (646) rounding out the top five.
Junior Carrie George fired a three-over-par 75 on Tuesday to finish tied for 17th with a 158 total, leading the Lady Pirates individually. The 75 was a career-best round for the Savannah native, bettering her previous low round of 78 by three strokes.
Sophomore Kim Knox shot an 80 on Tuesday and finished tied for 34th with a 167 total, while freshman Kelly Pearce shot a 79 and finished tied for 40th with a 169 total. Junior Sarah Johns carded an 83 on Tuesday to finish in 49th place with a 173 total.
Freshman Jessica Tomberlin rounded out the AASU team scoring with an 81, finishing tied for 55th with a 176 total. Sophomore Allison Smith, playing as an individual, shot an 88 on Tuesday and finished tied for 59th with a 185 total.
The Lady Pirates return to action on October 26-27 at the Flagler College Slam in St. Augustine, Fla.
