Howell, Buckner Named Assistant Women's Basketball Coaches For 2016-17

SAVANNAH, Ga. - Armstrong State University head coach Fala Bullock has announced that Amber Howell and Katie Buckner will serve as assistant coaches on the Pirates' staff for the upcoming 2016-17 season.

Howell served as a graduate assistant coach for the Pirates last season and will be elevated to the full-time assistant coaching position for the upcoming 2016-17 season. She played for two seasons, averaging 7.7 points and 4.1 rebounds per game in 55 contests for the Pirates in 2013-15. Howell earned her bachelor's degree in liberal arts from Armstrong State in 2015.

"Amber has grown up tremendously in our program both as a player and now as a coach," Bullock said. "I am excited to continue to help Amber grow as a college coach. She has a very bright future because of her passion for the game, relationship-building skills and her willingness to learn."

Buckner, meanwhile, joined the Pirates last season as a volunteer assistant coach and will now be a graduate assistant coach for Armstrong State. A four-year player at Mars Hill College from 2009-13, Buckner played in 82 games in her career for the Lions and earned her bachelor's degree in sport management from MHC in 2013. She is currently pursuing her graduate degree in professional communication and leadership from Armstrong State University.

"Katie was a volunteer assistant last season and did a fantastic job of learning all the roles of our staff," Bullock said. "Katie has persevered in her young life and her life lessons will help to make her a great role model for our players."

"Our staff are all Division II players turned coaches," Bullock added. "We are very proud to help recruit and teach players about this level and especially about our great university and athletics program."
