SAVANNAH, Ga. - The Armstrong State University women's basketball team knocked down six of nine three-pointers en route to a 72-60 Peach Belt Conference victory over visiting UNC Pembroke on Senior Day, Saturday at Alumni Arena.
The win for the Pirates (13-12, 11-7 PBC) was the third straight at home and finishes off a home slate for Armstrong in which the Pirates went 9-4. UNC Pembroke (9-16, 7-11 PBC) drops into a tie for the fourth and final spot in the PBC Tournament from the East Division with GRU Augusta.
Armstrong built a 13-point lead in the first half, leading 26-13 after a three-pointer by junior Shermika Harris with 7:34 left until the break. UNC Pembroke chipped away at the lead and closed to within one at intermission, 32-31.
The lead changed hands six times in the second half, with the Braves holding their last lead, 55-54, with 8:01 left after a three-pointer by Katelyn Harris. Freshman Lexy Schoonover answered with a basket to put the Pirates back in front, 56-55, with 7:35 left, then Harris drained another three-pointer to build the lead to four, 59-55, with 6:13 left. Harris then clinched the win for the Pirates by making 8-of-8 free throws in the final two minutes.
Harris and sophomore Brigitta Barta each led the Pirates on the day with 20 points. Barta hit 9-of-18 shots from the floor, including nailing her only three-point attempt, while Harris was 4-of-10 from the floor but a perfect 3-of-3 on three-pointers and 9-of-9 from the free throw line. Senior Dee Hayward added 13 points and five assists as well for Armstrong.
UNC Pemrboke was led by Jazmine Kemp's 21 points on 10-of-16 shooting from the floor, while Kierra Haney added a double-double of 15 points and 12 rebounds.
Armstrong said goodbye to five seniors - players Hayward, Amber Howell, Amber Johnson and Tori Klewicki-McNutt, as well as manager Tirae Stevens - seeing their final action at home as Pirates. The game began with UNC Pembroke scoring an uncontested layup so that Klewicki-McNutt, who has not played all year due to an injury, could score her first bucket of the season.
Armstrong will wrap up the 2014-15 regular season by traveling to Flagler for a 5:30 p.m. Peach Belt Conference contest on Wednesday, February 25th.
