No. 18 Lander Shoots Down Pirates, 85-52
SAVANNAH, Ga. - The No. 18-ranked Lander University women's basketball team shot 51 percent from the floor in notching an 85-52 Peach Belt Conference victory over host Armstrong Atlantic State University on Wednesday evening at Alumni Arena.
The win keeps the Bearcats (19-4, 14-1 PBC) atop the PBC East Division standings, while Armstrong (13-10, 7-8 PBC) remains fourth in the league standings, trailing UNC Pembroke by two games for third place with three to play.
Lander jumped out to a quick 13-2 lead in the game's first four minutes, but Armstrong responded with a 14-2 run of its own to take a 16-15 lead midway through the first half. With the score tied at 22-all with 5:35 left, Lander ended the half on a 13-4 run to take a 35-26 lead into halftime.
The Bearcats then opened the second half on a 17-7 run over a five minute span to open up a 19-point lead and cruise to the victory.
Lander hit 33-of-65 shots from the floor for 50.8 percent while holding Armstrong to just 18 of 51 shots from the floor for 35.3 percent. The Bearcats held a 40-32 edge in rebounds and forced 20 Armstrong turnovers.
Five players scored in double figures for Lander, paced by Ciara Lyons' 20 points and Janyce Ealey's double-double of 15 points and 13 rebounds off the bench. Brittni Johnson added 15 rebounds while Mukia Myrick chipped in 13 and Precious Elkins added 10.
The Pirates return to action on Saturday, February 18th, visiting UNC Pembroke for a 1:30 p.m. Peach Belt Conference contest in Pembroke, N.C.
