Pirates Scorch Yellow Jackets, 74-47


SAVANNAH, Ga. - The Armstrong Atlantic State University women's basketball squad used a 15-0 late first-half run to pick up a 74-47 victory over visiting Allen University in non-conference action on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Arena.

The Pirates (12-7) shot a season-high 53.4 percent from the floor (31-of-58) in notching their second straight win, while Allen (5-14) dropped its fourth straight contest.

Armstrong led by nine, 25-16, with 6:06 left in the first half when it shot out to a 15-0 run over the next three and a half minutes as a Mauri Wells layup with 2:27 left capped the run and made the score 40-16. The Pirates took a 43-21 lead into halftime thanks to a 58 percent shooting performance from the floor before the break.

The Yellow Jackets closed the gap to 17 on two occasions in the second half, but shot just 23 percent from the floor after the break and turned the ball over 30 times in the contest. Armstrong notched a season-high 17 steals in the victory.

Junior Demisha Mills led a quartet of Pirates in double figures with 15 points, while sophomore Mauri Wells notched her NCAA Division II-leading 15th double-double of the season with 12 points and 14 rebounds. D.D. Gipson came off the bench to chip in 11 points and freshman Dee Hayward added 10 points on a perfect 4-for-4 shooting performance from the field.

Allen placed three players in double figures, led by Tammy Bennon and Katrece Daniels, who each collected 11 points. Kendra McMichael chipped in 10 points as well.

Armstrong returns to action on Wednesday, February 1, visiting Peach Belt Conference-leading Lander for a 5:30 p.m. matchup in Greenwood, S.C.
