Pirates Notch 88-64 PBC-Opening Win Over Flagler

SAVANNAH, Ga. - Junior D.D. Gipson led a quartet of Armstrong Atlantic State University Pirates in double figures in a 88-64 Peach Belt Conference-opening women's basketball win over Flagler College on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Arena.

The Pirates (6-1, 1-0 PBC) won their Peach Belt opener for a sixth consecutive year by forcing 20 turnovers by the Saints (1-5, 0-1 PBC) while outrebounding Flagler, 48-35, and taking advantage at the free throw line by shooting 87.1 percent from the stripe (27-of-31).

Gipson hit 7-of-11 shots from the floor and 5-of-7 shots from the free throw line for her season-high 19 points, adding seven rebounds. Junior Angelia Hill added 11 points and junior Karolina Rykowska chipped in 10 points, while sophomore Mauri Wells grabbed 16 rebounds.

"D.D., I thought, had the best game of her career at Armstrong," Pirate head coach Matt Schmidt said. "She posted big and finished. I'm very proud of her effort today."

Flagler was led by Taye'Lor Trotter's game-high 21 points off the bench and Treva Mason's 10 rebounds and six points.

"We talked all week long about how this is a new season, the first conference game, and we wanted to get off on a good foot," Schmidt said. "I thought we played well from the time the ball got tipped up until it ended. I think it's very important to get off to that 1-0 start, especially when it's in your division, so I was very proud of our effort and pleased with what we did today."

Armstrong finished the game hitting 30-of-69 shots from the floor (43.5 percent) while Flagler hit 26-of-66 shots from the floor (39.4 percent).

The Pirates break for final exams but will return to action on Wednesday, December 14, visiting nationally-ranked USC Aiken for a 5:30 p.m. PBC game against the Pacers.
