Wingate by Wyndham Pirate Classic Wrapup - Day Two

SAVANNAH, Ga. - The Armstrong Atlantic State University women's basketball team withstood a second-half charge from visiting Anderson (SC) to earn a 53-50 win over the Trojans and finish the Wingate by Wyndham Pirate Classic as the only unbeaten team. Young Harris knocked off Flagler, 64-49, in the day's other contest.

The Pirates (4-0) have started the season with four straight wins for the first time since 2002-03 season, while Anderson (SC) falls to 1-3 on the year with the loss.

Armstrong held a 10-point lead at halftime, 28-18, and the Pirates pushed that lead to 14 points, 34-20, with 13:29 left in the contest. Anderson (SC) came all the way back behind three-pointers from Tilde Ahlin, Lauren Woods and finally Amanda Parris, who made two in just over a two-minute stretch to draw the Trojans even with the Pirates at 47-all with 3:06 remaining.

Junior Demisha Mills' layup with 1:26 left put the Pirates back up by two, 49-47, then freshman Dee Hayward made four free throws in the final 30 seconds to clinch the victory.

Sophomore Mauri Wells notched her fourth double-double of the season with 13 points and 14 rebounds to lead the Pirates, while Mills finished the game with 13 points and Angelia Hill added 11 points.

Alissa Diaz led the Trojans with 14 points, the only player to reach double figures for Anderson (SC).

"I thought this weekend was a huge weekend for Pirate basketball," Armstrong head coach Matt Schmidt said. "We played two very good opponents and got two region wins - starting the year 4-0, which is big for our program.

"I thought both nights, defense is what allowed us to be successful," Schmidt said. "Our ball pressure and our ability to get into the passing lanes caused a lot of problems for Anderson today. We also got great play from Mauri Wells, Dee Hayward and Angel Hill."

In the first game of the day, Young Harris finished the weekend with a split by defeating Flagler, 64-49. The Mountain Lions (3-1) held the Saints (0-3) to just 29.8 percent shooting from the floor, while shooting 51.1 percent themselves.

Ladondra Johnson led all players with 19 points on 9-of-14 shooting from the floor to pace Young Harris, while Lauren Smith hit 8-of-12 shots for 16 points. Flagler was led by Jen Knurek's 15 points.

Armstrong will return to action on Tuesday, November 22nd, with a 5:30 p.m. contest against Coastal Georgia.
