Lady Pirates Close Out Season With 98-56 Loss At FMU


FLORENCE, S.C. - The Armstrong Atlantic State University women's basketball team closed out the 2010-11 season with a 98-56 loss at Francis Marion on Saturday afternoon at the Smith University Center in Florence, S.C.

The Lady Pirates (8-18, 4-14 PBC) close out the season on an eight-game losing streak, while Francis Marion (18-8, 11-7 PBC) will head into the 2011 PBC Championships as the third seed from the East Division.

Armstrong jumped out to a quick 7-2 lead in the game's first three and a half minutes, but a 14-0 run by Francis Marion over the next four minutes allowed the Lady Patriots to assert control. The Lady Pirates committed 29 turnovers in the contest and Francis Marion led by 16 at halftime, 44-28, then quickly doubled that lead in the first 10 minutes of the second half, leading 73-37 with 11:30 left to go in the game.

The Lady Pirates placed a pair of players in double figures as sophomore Jazmin Walker and freshman Mauri Wells each scored 15 points in the contest. Armstrong's lone senior on the squad, Arpine Amirkhanyan, finished her Lady Pirate career with six points and five rebounds.

Francis Marion placed four players in double figures, led by Shannon Singleton-Bates' game-high 27 points on 11-of-25 shooting from the floor, including 4-of-10 from three-point range. Courtney Mealing came off the bench to chip in 21 points, while Robin Colbert added 15 points and Simone Trice notched 10.
