Flagler Eliminates Armstrong State Softball From PBC Tournament, 2-1 In 12 Innings

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. - Flagler College's Mackenzie Conley singled in the winning run in the top of the 12th inning to give the Saints a 2-1 win over Armstrong State University, eliminating the Pirates in the 2017 Peach Belt Conference Softball Championships in the semifinal round in Milledgeville.

The Saints (37-18) advance to face North Georgia in the PBC Championship game on Saturday evening. The Pirates (30-11) will now await word of an at-large berth into the NCAA Championships, to be announced on Monday, May 1st.

Flagler scored the first run of the game in the second inning on back-to-back doubles from Maria Kappos and Morgan Murphy. The Pirates did not get on the board until the bottom of the seventh inning, when sophomore Connor Weaver's two-out RBI single to left scored pinch runner Morgan Duff to send the game to extra innings.

The Pirates twice had the winning run on third in extra innings, but Flagler's Katelynn Smith (9-7) pitched out of the jam each time. In the top of the 12th inning, Whitney Woodard led off the inning with a single, stole second, then one out later scored the winning run on Conley's single.

Smith hurled 5 1/3 innings of four-hit shutout ball to pick up the win for the Saints. Jane Trzaska (14-6) took the loss for the Pirates, giving up six hits and one run in 4 2/3 innings of relief, walking two while striking out four.

Weaver, freshman Tazha Williams and sophomore Logan Harrell each had two hits on the day for the Pirates. Conley and Murphy each had two hits and an RBI for the Saints. Harrell and Trzaska were named to the All-Tournament Team after the conclusion of the tournament.
