MELBOURNE, Fla. - The No. 4-ranked Armstrong State University softball squad launched four home runs in a 10-2 five-inning victory over Stonehill College on Friday afternoon at the Florida Tech Marriott Brawl at the Beach in Melbourne, Fla.
The Pirates improved to 5-1 on the season with the win, while Stonehill drops its season opener to fall to 0-1. Armstrong State continues action in the tournament on Saturday, facing No. 16 Saint Leo at 12:30 p.m. and East Stroudsburg at 4:30 p.m.
Stonehill took a 2-0 lead in the game in the first inning on an RBI single by Cassandra Squeri and an RBI double by Erin Brayden.
The Pirates got their first run in the bottom of the second on an RBI single by sophomore Katie Collins, then took the lead for good in the bottom of the third on a two-run home run by senior Hannah Reppert and an RBI single by sophomore Conner Weaver.
Armstrong State then blasted three home runs in a six-run fourth inning. Collins had a solo home run to lead off the inning, then Reppert hit her second of the day - a three-run shot - to make the score 8-2. Senior Jane Trzaska then capped the scoring with a two-run home run.
Senior Tori Bates (1-0) picked up the win for the Pirates, giving up three hits and two runs - one earned - in 3 2/3 innings of work, striking out five. Squeri (0-1) took the loss for the Skyhawks, giving up seven hits and six runs - four earned - in 3 1/3 innings of work, striking out one.
Reppert finished the game 2-for-3 with two home runs and five RBI, while Trzaska and Collins each had two hits and two RBI.
