No. 7 Pirates Shut Out Flagler In Pair Of PBC Wins

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. - The No. 7-ranked Armstrong Atlantic State University softball squad recorded a pair of shutouts in taking a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader from host Flagler on Saturday in St. Augustine, Fla., stretching its current win streak to 11.

The Pirates (37-8, 13-1 PBC) maintain its two-game lead in the Peach Belt standings with the sweep, while Flagler falls to 34-14 overall and 11-7 in the Peach Belt with the pair of losses.

Game one saw the Pirates take a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a Whitney Galloway RBI double, scoring Baillie Temples. That would be all the offense the Pirates would need in the game as Megan Barnwell (16-3) would keep the Saints off the scoreboard in a complete-game five-hit shutout, walking two while striking out 10 in the victory - her second shutout of the year.

Donna Munafo (16-3) would suffer the hard-luck loss in game one, giving up six hits and one run in seven innings pitched, walking one while striking out six.

Temples and Galloway would each collect two hits in game one to lead the Pirates at the plate.

Armstrong got off to a quick start again in game two, scoring twice in the top of the first inning to take a 2-0 lead. Galloway's infield RBI single would score Celia Blome, then Brittany Cooley would follow with a two-out RBI single to stake the Pirates to the two-run lead.

Caitlin Campbell (17-3) would do the rest for the Pirates, limiting Flagler to just two singles - one in the third inning and one in the sixth - in a two-hit shutout, striking out five for her third shutout of the season.

Katie Enright (8-4) would take the loss for the Saints in game two, giving up eight hits and two runs in seven innings of work, walking two while striking out seven.

Heather Walker would go 2-for-2 to lead the Pirates at the plate in the second game.

The double shutout is the first for the Pirates against a Peach Belt Conference opponent since April 12, 2004, when the Pirates swept a pair at Columbus State, 9-0 and 8-0.

Armstrong returns to action on Friday, April 13, visiting USC Aiken for a 4:00 p.m. Peach Belt Conference doubleheader.
