SAVANNAH, Ga. - The No. 3-ranked Armstrong State University men's tennis team kicked off a six-match homestand with an 8-1 win over Tiffin University on Wednesday afternoon at the Armstrong Tennis Complex.
The Pirates improved to 8-1 on the season with the win, while the Dragons fell to 6-3. Armstrong State returns to action on Sunday, hosting Northwood (Mich.) at 10:00 a.m. at the Armstrong Tennis Complex.
Armstrong State won two of three doubles matches to take a 2-1 lead heading into singles play. The No. 5-ranked duo of Alberto Caceres Casas and Jan Porteset defeated Luis Ludena and Toby Cutting, 8-5, at No. 1 doubles, while No. 14-ranked Luca Cerin and Ignacio Hernandez defeated Justin Kopronica and Sorin Novatchi, 8-2, at No. 3 doubles. Elio Lezama and Andrew Isaac of Tiffin defeated Alvaro Cruz Chomorro and Bjorn Kurtze, 9-8, at No. 2 doubles for the Dragons' doubles point.
The Pirates then won all six singles matches to clinch the match. No. 28-ranked Cerin won a third-set 10-point tiebreaker to defeat Ludena, 3-6, 6-1, (10-2) at No. 1 singles, while No. 4-ranked Caceres Casas beat Isaac, 6-2, 6-4, at No. 2 singles. No. 22-ranked Hernandez downed Lezama, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 3 singles while Porteset downed Cutting, 6-2, 6-4, at No. 4 singles.
Cruz Chomorro beat Kopronica, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 5 singles and Lorenzo Camilli beat Novatchi, 6-3, 6-3, at No. 6 singles to wrap up action.
