SAVANNAH, Ga. - Armstrong State University freshman Alvaro Cruz Chomorro has been named the Peach Belt Conference's men's tennis Player of the Week, announced today by league officials.
Cruz Chomorro went 3-0 in singles and 3-1 in doubles for the No. 3-ranked Armstrong State men's tennis team in four matches against nationally-ranked opponents this week. He beat Filip Persson of No. 4 (NAIA) Lindsey Wilson, 6-2, 6-4, as well as Alejandro Prada of No. 22 (NAIA) Middle Georgia, 6-1, 6-2.
His only loss came in doubles to No. 8 Lynn, an 8-6 decision at No. 3 doubles. The freshman helped the Pirates knock off No. 2 Saint Leo, the team that knocked Armstrong State out of the NCAA Semifinals last season, with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Charles Benet and an 8-5 doubles win with Ignacio Hernandez over Benet and Francisco Aparicio.
This is the first PBC Player of the Week honor for the Madrid, Spain, native and the Pirates this season.
Cruz Chomorro and the Pirates are next in action on Friday, traveling to No. 40 USC Aiken for a 1:00 p.m. Peach Belt Conference match against the Pacers.
