BRUNSWICK, Ga. - The No. 3-ranked Armstrong State University men's tennis team opened up the 2017 dual match season with a 5-0 exhibition win over Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College and a 9-0 win over No. 6 (NAIA) Coastal Georgia on Friday at the Torrey Tennis Complex.
The Pirates (1-0) began the day with the exhibition win over ABAC, winning all three doubles matches and taking two singles matches in straight sets.
Armstrong State then blanked the sixth-ranked team in NAIA, the Mariners, by winning all three doubles matches and taking all six singles matches in straight sets.
The Pirates got an 8-3 win at No. 1 doubles from No. 14-ranked Luca Cerin and Ignacio Hernandez over Rhan Burton and Adrian Farina, then an 8-0 win from Alberto Caceres Casas and Alvaro Cruz Chomorro over Josh Banks and Ben Dolan at No. 2 doubles. Lorenzo Camilli and Bjorn Kurtze completed the doubles sweep with an 8-4 win over Bautista Chiaradia and Kenta Naka at No. 3 doubles.
No. 28-ranked Cerin started off singles with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Banks at No. 1 singles. Kurtze downed Burton, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 2 singles, while No. 4-ranked Caceres beat Farina, 6-2, 6-0, at No. 3 singles. No. 22-ranked Hernandez knocked off Naka, 6-3, 6-1, at No. 4 singles, while Cruz beat Dolan, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 5 singles. Camilli finished the singles sweep with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Chiaradia.
Armstrong State returns to action on Wednesday, hosting Middle Georgia at 5:00 p.m. at the Armstrong State Tennis Complex, the home opener for the Pirates and the first dual match played on campus since 2009.
