SUMTER, S.C. - Armstrong Atlantic State University senior Pedro Scocuglia and sophomore Pablo Gor captured the ITA Southeast Regional doubles title on Sunday, advancing to the USTA/ITA Small College National Championships.
The duo defeated Espinosa and Martinez of Flagler, 8-6, to begin the day's action. In the semifinals, the pair upset the top-seeded duo of Cabellos & Guimares of GRU Augusta, 8-5, to earn a berth into the finals. Scocuglia and Gor then knocked off Marco Almorin and Adi Malicbegovic, 8-6, to collect the regional title. The pair will now advance to the USTA/ITA Small College National Championships in Fort Myers, Fla., on Oct. 10-13.
The pair are the fourth straight Armstrong duo to capture the ITA Southeast Region doubles title, following in the footsteps of Dan Regan and Georgi Rumenov in 2012, Scocuglia and Matus Mydla in 2011 and Rafael Array and Mikk Irdoja, who captured not only the region title in 2010 but the DII and "Super Bowl" title that year as well.
In singles action, the final will be an all-Armstrong matchup as No. 4-seeded Scocuglia defeated No. 2-seeded Andre Staab of Coker, 6-4, 6-1, in one semifinal match to advance to the final. In the other semifinal match, No. 8-seeded Pablo Gor upended teammate Ignacio Hernandez, 6-1, 6-2, to earn his berth into the final.
The final will be played at the Armstrong tennis complex at 1:00 p.m. on Monday.
