MOBILE, Ala. - Armstrong Atlantic State University senior Georgi Rumenov captured the ITA Division II singles championship on Saturday afternoon, then advanced to the "Super Bowl" title match in both singles and doubles with fellow senior Dan Regan after today's action at the Copeland-Cox Tennis Center in Mobile, Ala.
Rumenov defeated Hans Hach of Abilene Christian, 6-2, 6-2, to become just the third Armstrong player to earn the ITA's Division II singles national title - joining Christian Witt (1998) and Eudaldo Bonet (2008). With the victory, Rumenov advanced into the "Super Bowl" bracket, where he defeated Aaron Skinner of Trinity, 6-2, 6-1, to earn a berth in the final. He will take on Adrien Berkowicz of Tyler (Texas) JC on Sunday with the winner earning a wild card entry into the 2012 ITA National Indoor Championships.
In doubles action, Rumenov and Regan advanced to Sunday's "Super Bowl" doubles final by knocking off Micheli and Meyer of Williams, 6-1, 6-1. The duo will take on Auburn-Montgomery's duo of Pinones and Hewitt at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday, with the singles match to follow the doubles match.
The 2012 ITA National Indoor Championships will take place on November 8-11, 2012, at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y. The winner of the "Super Bowl" will be the only non-Division I player in the field. Armstrong's last men's representative in the ITA National Indoor Championships were Mikk Irdoja and Rafael Array, who advanced to the second round of the 2010 doubles championships.
