Armstrong Men's Tennis Opens Action At C.L. Varner Memorial


WINTER PARK, Fla. - The Armstrong Atlantic State University men's tennis team opened up action at the C.L. Varner Memorial on Friday, battling rainshowers to get one round of doubles and two rounds of singles action in.

In A Singles bracket action, junior Matus Mydla defeated Ivan Marevic, 6-0, 6-2, in first-round action, then Mydla defeated Willi Wolfer of Lynn, 6-3, 7-5, to advance to the quarterfinals.

Junior Daniel Regan fell in his first match of the A Singles bracket, losing 7-6, 7-5 to Vlad Cirla of Lynn.

In the B Singles bracket, sophomore Pedro Scocuglia won a pair of matches to advance to the quarterfinals, defeating Florida Southern's Jorge Gutierrez, 6-2, 6-3, and Saint Leo's Aloua Adjenak, 7-6, 7-5. Sven Lalic also advanced with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Lionel Vivas of Barry.

Doubles action saw the duo of Mydla and Scocuglia defaeat Marevic and Leavitt of Florida Southern, 8-1. The duo of Regan and Lalic knocked off Clerc and Fieldsend of Florida Tech, 8-2, but lost to Cirla and Vanhaelin of Lynn, 9-7.

Play continues on Saturday with both singles and doubles of action, then concludes on Sunday.
