Three Pirates Earn GCAA All-America Scholar Honors

SAVANNAH, Ga. - Three members of the Armstrong Atlantic State University men's golf squad have earned Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar honors as announced by the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) this afternoon. Senior Matt Motes earns the honor for a second straight year while juniors Tyler Erickson and Jacob Tilton each earn the honor for the first time in their careers.
The Pirates placed three on the Division II portion of the squad, which included 52 men's golfers from around the nation. Scholar status an individual must be a junior or senior academically, compete in at least three full years at the collegiate level, participate in 70-percent of his team's competitive rounds or compete in the NCAA Championships, have a stroke-average under 78.0 in Division II and maintain a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.2. A recipient must also be of high moral character and be in good standing at his college or university.
Motes becomes the second two-time honoree in Armstrong men's golf history after carrying a team-best 72.93 stroke average in 30 rounds of action this season while also maintaining a 3.82 GPA in rehabilitation sciences. The Augusta, Ga., native notched five Top 10 finishes this season and finished ninth at the NCAA South/Southeast Regional, missing an individual berth to the NCAA National Championships by just two strokes. He joins Ashley Loyd (2003-05) as a two-time All-American Scholar honoree from the GCAA.
Erickson, who carries a 3.86 GPA in chemistry, sported a 75.70 stroke average in 27 rounds of action in 2011-12 for the No. 18-ranked Pirates this season. The Warner Robins, Ga., native also earned 2012 Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-District III honors this season.
Tilton is the third honoree for the Pirates after carrying a 3.55 GPA in liberal studies while carding a 73.70 stroke average in 20 rounds of action, including three Top 10 finishes. The Evans, Ga., native was the 2010 Peach Belt Conference Freshman of the Year and was a second-team All-Conference honoree this season.
Overall, golfers from the Peach Belt Conference made up 10 of the 52 honorees this season.
