|Title:||Assistant Men's Basketball Coach|
The legendary Cazzie Russell begins his third season as an assistant for the Armstrong State men’s basketball team in 2016-17.
A member of the Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame, the first overall draft pick in NBA history in 1966, an NBA champion with the New York Knicks in 1970 and a 12-year veteran of the NBA, Russell’s contributions to both collegiate and professional basketball are numerous.
He was the head coach of the Savannah College of Art & Design’s men’s basketball team for 13 seasons but remained in the Coastal Empire area after the school discontinued basketball as an intercollegiate sport in 2009.
Russell joined head coach Evans Davis’ staff as a volunteer assistant coach for the 2014-15 season and has been instrumental in mentoring not only the Pirate student-athletes but the coaching staff as well.
He will be able to return to the University of Michigan and Crisler Arena - dubbed the “House That Cazzie Built” - when Armstrong State faces UM in an exhibition contest on November 4, 2017. It will be the first time that Russell will be on the court for a UM contest since 1966.
