BRUNSWICK, Ga. - The College of Coastal Georgia's Jordan Lewis hit a layup with four seconds remaining in the second half to give the Mariners an 83-81 win over Armstrong State University on Sunday afternoon in Brunswick, Ga.
The win was the first for the Mariners (3-7) over the Pirates (4-4) since the College of Coastal Georgia began four-year competition. Armstrong State will return to action on Saturday, December 17th, traveling to Georgia College for a 3:30 p.m. Peach Belt Conference contest against the Bobcats.
Armstrong State hit four three-pointers - three by freshman Corey Tillery - to take a 12-4 lead just two and a half minutes into the contest. Coastal Georgia fought back to take a one-point lead, 30-29, on a three-point basket by Haylen Washington with 3:20 left in the first half. The Pirates would go on a 10-3 run to end the first half and take a six-point lead, 39-33, into the break.
In the second half, the Pirates led by as many as 11 points, but Coastal Georgia tied things up at 58-all with eight minutes remaining and a back-and-forth game ensued. Two free throws from Washington gave the Mariners a 75-73 lead with 1:43 left, but Tillery canned a three on the next possession to put the Pirates back in front, 76-75, with 1:43 left. The two teams traded baskets on the next possession and the Mariners ended up hitting four free throws to take an 81-78 lead with 36 seconds left.
Senior Jamison Jeffers tied the game up, 81-81, with a three-point shot with 26 seconds left. On the Mariners' final possession, Lewis held the ball near halfcourt, then drove to the left side and hit a short layup with four seconds left to give Coastal Georgia the lead. Jeffers was able to bring the ball down the court and get off a tying shot attempt from just inside the three point line, but it missed to the left.
Tillery hit 8-of-17 shots from the floor, including 5-of-10 three-pointers, en route to 25 points, leading the Pirates offensively on the day. Freshman Kalen Clifton added 18 points off the bench, while junior Denzel Council notched a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Jeffers finished the game with 10 points and four assists.
Washington led the Mariners with a game-high 29 points, including 7-of-11 from the field and a perfect 14-of-14 from the free throw line. Jaylen Smallwood and Lewis each had 13 points, while Brandon Martin added 11 points.
Armstrong State hit 25-of-70 shots from the field (35.7 percent) while Coastal Georgia hit 25-of-62 shots from the field (40.3 percent). The Pirates knocked down 9-of-24 three-pointers (37.5 percent) while the Mariners hit just 4-of-15 three-pointers (26.7 percent). Coastal Georgia made 29-of-31 free throws (93.6 percent) while the Pirates made 22-of-28 free throws (78.57).
