Armstrong's DeVon Jones Awarded 58th Annual Ashley Dearing Cup
SAVANNAH, Ga. - Armstrong Atlantic State senior forward DeVon Jones was awarded the 58th annual Ashley Dearing Cup today for leading the 2011-12 Pirate men’s basketball team in free throw percentage.
A native of Jackson, Tenn., Hall hit 47-of-58 free throws this season for an 81.0 percentage. He improved tremendously from his junior season, where he hit 65.5 percent, and he finished the 2011-12 season by making 16 of his last 18 free throws.
On the season, Jones averaged 10.0 points per game, one of five Armstrong players to average double digit scoring in 2011-12, while also collecting 5.8 rebounds per game. His team-best 56.1 field goal percentage ranked sixth in the Peach Belt Conference this season.
The award, established by long-time Savannah area sports supporter Ashley Dearing, was instituted in 1954 to emphasize the importance of the free throw. Today’s award was presented by Ashley’s wife, Angela, in front of Armstrong athletic staff and campers in head coach Jeremy Luther's summer boys basketball camp. The Savannah community lost Dearing, an Armstrong Atlantic State Athletic Hall of Fame citation winner, in March of 2009, but Mrs. Dearing has committed to carrying on the tradition of the Ashley Dearing Cup in his honor.
