SAVANNAH, Ga. - Flagler College's Sean Lawlor broke a 1-1 tie in the top of the ninth inning with an RBI single to give the visiting Saints a 2-1 Peach Belt Conference baseball victory over host Armstrong State University on Sunday afternoon at Pirate Field.
The win gives Flagler (24-16, 12-6 PBC) the series win over the Pirates, who fell to 16-20 overall and 1-14 in the league with the loss. Armstrong State returns to action on Tuesday, hosting Belmont Abbey in a 3:00 p.m. non-conference contest at Pirate Field.
Flagler scored the first run of the game in the top of the fourth inning on Ja'Kobi Dasher's RBI single. The Pirates tied the game up in the bottom of the sixth inning on Ryan Patterson's sacrifice fly.
Armstrong State starter Matt Meeks and Flagler starter Cooper Wallace dueled into the eighth inning, when Luke Cooksey (3-1) was called in relief of Wallace to get the final out of the eighth inning and keep the score even.
In the top of the ninth inning, the Saints put two runners on with one out via walks, then a wild pitch from reliever Nathan Ward moved the runners up one base. Lawlor then singled home the go-ahead run, while the Pirates threw out a potential third run at the plate.
In the bottom of the ninth, Chandler Corley singled to lead off the inning. A fielder's choice replaced him with Patterson at first, and Patterson moved to third after a pair of wild pitches, but with two outs, Cooksey retired Zack Goble on a popout to the second baseman to close out the game.
Cooksey hurled 1 1/3 innings of one-hit shutout relief to notch the victory, striking out one. Meeks (2-4) was the hard-luck loser, giving up seven hits and two runs in 8 1/3 innings for the Pirates, walking two while striking out four.
Dasher and Lawlor each had two hits for the Saints. Dylan Jones tied the Peach Belt Conference single season doubles record with his 26th of the year. Mike Warren had the Pirates' lone extra base hit on the day, a double in the sixth.
