Pair Of Big Innings Pushes Flagler Baseball Past Pirates, 17-8

SAVANNAH, Ga. - The Flagler College baseball team used a pair of big innings to take a 17-8 Peach Belt Conference series-opening win over host Armstrong State University on Friday afternoon at Pirate Field.

The Saints improve to 23-15 overall and 11-5 in the PBC with the win, while Armstrong State falls to 15-19 overall and 0-13 in the league with the loss. The two teams will continue their series with a 1:00 p.m. contest on Saturday.

With the score tied at 1-all, the Pirates plated three runs in the second inning - on RBI singles by Cal Young, Mike Warren and Chandler Corley - to take a 4-1 lead.

Flagler erased that lead with five runs in the top of the fourth inning, capped by a three-run home run by Igor Baez, to lead 6-4. The Saints then added six runs in the fifth inning, getting back-to-back two-run singles from Jake Hathaway and Cole Ondrejka to build an unassailable 12-4 lead.

The offense was plenty for the Saints' Michael Maiocco, who improved to 8-2 on the year by giving up nine hits and six runs - five earned - in five innings of work, walking three and striking out one. Armstrong State starter Sam Goberdhan (3-4) took the loss, giving up 10 hits and 11 runs in 4 2/3 innings of work, walking six while striking out four.

Ever Flagler starter had at least one hit and three players tallied three-hit days - Dylan Jones, Hathaway and Ja'Kobi Dasher. Warren and Corley each had three hits for the Pirates, while Zack Goble had two hits, including a solo home run.
