ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. - The Armstrong Atlantic State University baseball squad ran its winning streak to five with a 7-4 Peach Belt Conference victory over Flagler College on Friday evening at Drysdale Field.
The Pirates (20-14, 11-11 PBC) moved to .500 in the league with their fourth straight Peach Belt win, while Flagler (18-22, 9-16 PBC) dropped its sevehth game in a row with the defeat.
The game was scoreless until the top of the fifth inning when the Pirates pushed across a pair of runs with two outs. Joey Lupus walked, then Dalton Johnson laced an RBI triple to right center for the first run. Johnson then scored on a wild pitch by Danny Brown to put Armstrong up, 2-0.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, Flagler tied things up at 2-2 with an RBI single by Nick Kranick and a fielder's choice RBI by Tyler Vanover.
Armstrong quickly retook the lead in the sixth inning with three runs on RBI singles by Ryan Patterson and Matt Wisniewski, along with an RBI fielder's choice by Joey Lupus. Flagler got one back in the bottom of the seventh inning on a solo home run by Kranick, but the Pirates added two insurance runs in the eighth on an error and a wild pitch.
Flagler loaded the bases with nobody out in the bottom of the ninth inning. Lorenzo Butler drove home a run with an RBI single to make the score 7-4, but Justin Adkins entered the contest and retired the next three batters to save the win for the Pirates.
Ryan Good (5-3) hurled seven innings of seven-hit, three-run ball, walking five while striking out eight in his longest outing of the season to notch the win. Danny Brown (2-3) took the loss for the Saints, giving up eight hits and seven runs - six earned - while walking three and striking out eight in 7 1/3 innings of work. Adkins notched his first save of the season.
Dennard went 3-for-5 with a double and two runs scored to lead the Pirates offensively, while Patterson had two hits. Kranick led the Saints on the evening by going 3-for-3 with a home run, two RBIs and two walks.
The Pirates and the Saints will play game two of their three-game Peach Belt Conference series on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. at Drysdale Field.
