SAVANNAH, Ga. - The Armstrong Atlantic State University baseball squad rapped out 28 hits in two games to pick up a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader sweep of Flagler College on Saturday afternoon at Pirate Field. The Pirates won game one, 7-3, then took the nightcap, 12-7.
The Pirates (21-9, 12-7 PBC) have now won eight out of their last nine contests while also picking up a fifth consecutive series with thanks to the sweep of the Saints (15-20, 7-16 PBC).
Flagler took a 3-0 lead in game one by scoring single runs in each of the first three innings, but the Pirates scored twice in the third inning on an RBI fielder's choice and an RBI single by Clayton Miller. The Pirates took the lead for good with a four-run fourth inning on a two-run single by Chase Butler and a two-run single by Miller, then tacked on a single run in the sixth on an RBI single by R.J. Dennard.
Mitchell Dolan (2-0) notched the win in game one for the Pirates with four innings of three-hit shutout relief, walking three while striking out three.
Danny Brown (2-5) took the loss for the Saints in game one by giving up 13 hits and seven runs - two earned - in eight innings, walking two while striking out five.
In game two, Flagler similarly took a 3-1 lead after three and a half innings with single runs in the second. on a sacrifice fly by Joe Post; the third inning, on a sacrifice fly by Brett Moreland; and in the fourth inning, on an RBI triple by Post.
Armstrong tacked on another three runs in the fifth inning on a two-run triple by Miller and a sacrifice fly by Nathan Ward. An RBI double by Butler made the score 8-3 in the sixth inning.
Flagler plated two runs in the top of the seventh on an RBI double by Andrew Brodbeck and a sacrifice fly by Moreland, but the Pirates put the game out of reach with a four-run bottom of the seventh inning on a two-run single by Cody Sherlin and a two-run double by Fritts.
Ethan Bader (5-0) picked up the win for the Pirates in game two, giving up five hits and three runs in six innings of work, walking one while striking out eight.
Tyler Ward (2-2) took the loss for the Saints in game two, giving up 10 hits and seven runs - six earned - in five innings of work, striking out one.
Miller went 7-for-10 in the doubleheader with five RBIs to pace the Pirates offensively, while Fritts went 5-for-8 with three runs scored and three RBIs.
Flagler was led by Post and Jake Hanson, who each went 4-for-8.
Armstrong and Flagler wrap up their three-game series with a single game at 1 p.m. on Sunday at Pirate Field.
