AUGUSTA, Ga. - Armstrong Atlantic State University junior Juan Vera hurled eight innings of two-run ball and the Pirates cranked out 14 hits to notch a 10-2 Peach Belt Conference win over host Augusta State University on Monday afternoon, salvaging a game of the three-game series with the Jaguars at Lake Olmstead Stadium.
The Pirates (7-2, 1-2 PBC) rebounded from Monday's doubleheader sweep with two four-run innings to knock off the Jaguars (5-5, 2-1 PBC) in the league-opening series for both teams.
Armstrong got on the board in the second inning, courtesy of junior Dalton Johnson's two-run single to give the Pirates a 2-0 lead.
The Jaguars' Jeff Rice made it a one-run game in the bottom of the second inning with an RBI single, but the Pirates responded with a four-run frame in the third inning, getting RBI singles from junior Clayton Miller and senior Mike Barnhill, as well as a sacrifice fly from senior Chris Zittrouer and a wild pitch by Jaguars starter Josh Barks (0-1).
Armstrong put the game away with four more runs in the sixth inning, getting RBI singles from junior Chase Butler and sophomore R.J. Dennard, as well as a two-run double from Zittrouer to make the score 10-1.
Vera (2-0) then held the Jaguars' bats in check to notch his second win of the season, hurling eight innigns of seven-hit two-run ball, walking two while striking out four. Barks took the loss for the Jaguars, giving up eight hits and six runs in three innings of work, walking one while striking out three.
Butler went 3-for-5 to pace the Pirates at the plate as six different Armstrong players had multi-hit games. Zittrouer finished 2-for-5 with three RBIs.
J.D. Sabo, Rice and Logan South each had two-hit games for the Jaguars.
Armstrong returns to action on Saturday, February 23, traveling to Georgia Southwestern for a 3:00 p.m. Peach Belt Conference matchup in Americus, Ga.
