Hall, No. 17 Pirates Handcuff No. 3 Pacers, 5-2, On Saturday

SAVANNAH, Ga. - Senior lefthander Chandler Hall hurled a complete-game four-hitter as the No. 17-ranked Armstrong Atlantic State University baseball squad notched a 5-2 win over No. 3 USC Aiken on Saturday in the first game of a three-game Peach Belt Conference series in Savannah.

Hall collected his third complete game of the season, limiting the Peach Belt's top-hitting team to just four singles while rolling 13 ground ball outs to improve to 5-2 on the season. He retired the final nine batters in order to pick up the victory, walking one while striking out three in the victory.

With the win, Armstrong improves to 25-9 overall and 11-8 in the Peach Belt, while USC Aiken falls to 26-10 overall and 15-7 in the league.

Each team pushed across an unearned run in the first inning of the contest. Nick Aranas' sacrifice fly scored Stephen Carmon in the top of the first for a brief 1-0 lead for the Pacers, but a passed ball by USC Aiken catcher Josh Miller allowed Casey Maloney to score in the bottom of the frame for a 1-1 score.

Mike Barnhill's two-out RBI double over the head of right fielder Will Tankersley in the bottom of the second put the Pirates up by one, 2-1. USC Aiken tied things up in the top of the fourth inning on an RBI single by Tyler Bourdo.

The Pirates took the lead for good in the bottom of the fourth as, with the bases loaded, Barnhill hit a slow roller to second base. Bourdo got the force out at second, but the shortstop Carmon's relay throw to first was wide of the bag and hit off the first baseman Ty Barkell's glove, allowing Clayton Miller to score from second after John Roberts had already scored on the ground ball.

Armstrong added an insurance run in the seventh on an RBI single by Alex Frederick, making the score 5-2.

Kelly Holt (3-4) took the loss for the Pacers, giving up five hits and four runs - two earned - in 5 1/3 innings pitched, walking five while striking out six.

Neither team had a batter with multiple hits in the game as Barnhill's two RBIs in a 1-for-3 day led the Pirates at the plate. Bourdo went 1-for-3 with an RBI to lead the Pacers.

The two teams wrap up their three-game Peach Belt Conference series with a Noon doubleheader on Easter Sunday at Pirate Field.
