No. 25 Pirates Win Seventh Straight, Down Dragons 15-2
SAVANNAH, Ga. - The No. 25-ranked Armstrong Atlantic State University baseball squad won its seventh straight contest with a 15-2 victory over visiting Tiffin University on Thursday afternoon, wrapping up action in the 2012 Savannah Invitational.
The Pirates improved to 16-5 with the win as Armstrong pounded out 15 hits against the Dragons (4-8), who fell to 1-4 in the Invitational.
Armstrong plated four runs in each of the first two innings against the Dragons for the big early advantage. John Roberts' two-RBI single to center capped the first-inning scoring, then RBI doubles by R.J. Dennard and Cody Powell pushed the lead to 8-2.
Tiffin's only two runs came in the second inning on a two-RBI double by K.C. Weber.
Armstrong plated two runs in the fourth inning on a straight steal of home by Powell and an RBI double by Roberts. The Pirates finished off the day's scoring with five runs in the fifth inning on a two-RBI single by Zach Taylor, an RBI fielder's choice by Drew Walker, an RBI single by Roberts and another RBI single by Alex Frederick.
Ross Beach (1-0) picked up his first win as a Pirate, hurling three innings of five-hit, two-run ball, striking out two. Tiffin's Nick Rodesky (1-2) took the loss for the Dragons, giving up four hits and six runs - three earned - in one-plus innings, walking three while striking out one.
Roberts went 3-for-4 with four RBIs to pace the Pirates at the plate, while Dennard went 3-for-4 and Taylor - the nation's leader in RBIs - tacked on three more in a 2-for-5 day.
Kyle Robinson collected two hits to lead the Dragons, while Weber finished 1-for-2 with his two-run double.
Armstrong returns to action on Friday, March 16, traveling to Montevallo for an 8:00 p.m. Peach Belt Conference contest in Montevallo, Ala.
