The AlphaGraphics Armstrong State Student-Athlete of the Month for January is senior men's basketball standout Shaquiell Mitchell.
AlphaGraphics and the Armstrong athletic department are teaming up to honor one student-athlete each month that best represents the Pirates' drive to succeed on the field and in the classroom. The Pirates have won the Peach Belt Conference Commissioner's Cup four straight years and the Presidential Academic Award two of the last three years and success can not happen without the efforts of our outstanding student-athletes.
A native of Adams Run, S.C., Mitchell averaged points per game and 7.1 rebounds per game for the Armstrong State men's basketball team. The senior had three games of 20+ points and two double-doubles during the month and has been one of the big reasons the Pirates are currently third in the Peach Belt Conference's East Division and on pace to quality for the PBC Tournament for the first time since 2012-13.
The South Carolina State transfer, in his second season with the Pirates, carries a 3.03 GPA in liberal studies and is on track to graduate from Armstrong State University in May. He currently ranks 10th in the PBC in scoring average and seventh in rebounding.
