Men’s Basketball (9-10, PBC 5-6)

The Armstrong Atlantic State University men’s basketball team was on the road in Dahlonega, Ga. for the team’s only game this week in a conference contest against North Georgia on Jan. 25.

Armstrong trailed by as many as 17 points in the first half due to a 19-2 run that North Georgia had, which put the Saints up 40-23 with 2:37 to go in the first. Going into halftime the Pirates were down 12, 45-33.

In the second half Armstrong chipped away at North Georgia’s lead, but it wasn’t until the 4:15 mark that the Pirates tied the score at 63-63.

Unfortunately for the Pirates on the next possession the Saints responded with a three-pointer to stay on top. And although Armstrong remained within striking distance two late turnovers by the Pirates sealed their fate with a 75-71 loss.

The men’s squad hopes to bounce back at Lander on Feb. 1 before returning home to take on the leaders of the PBC’s East Division USC Aiken on Feb. 4.

Women’s Basketball (12-7, 6-5 PBC)

The Armstrong Atlantic State University women’s basketball team picked up two wins this week, on the road against North Georgia and at home in a mid-season non-conference game against Allen University.

On Jan. 25 the Pirates went into Dahlonega, Ga. and handed the Saints a loss for the second straight year.

The game was back-and-forth early on, but once Armstrong took the lead with 7:43 to go in the first half they never relinquished it again as the Pirates went on to a 66-61 victory.

The Jan. 28 contest with Allen was a completely one-sided affair. Up nine with just over six minutes to go before halftime the Pirates used a 15-0 to put the Yellow Jackets at a 40-16 disadvantage.

In the second half Allen could only managed to cut Armstrong’s lead to 17 as the Pirates cruised to a 72-47 win. Armstrong had season-highs with 17 steals and a 53.4 percent from the floor.

The Pirates return to action against Lander, who is undefeated in conference play, on Feb. 1 in Greenwood, S.C. and then return home to face the No. 2 team in the Peach Belt East Division USC Aiken on Feb. 5.

Baseball

The Armstrong Atlantic State University baseball team opens up the 2012 season this week hosting Winston-Salem State for a three game series on Feb. 3-4.

The Pirates finished the 2011 season with a record of 35-17 overall 14-10 in the Peach Belt Conference and ranked No. 23 in Division II.

Entering the 2012 season Armstrong is ranked in a pair of collegiate preseason polls, No. 25 by the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Preseason Division II rankings and No. 27 in the Collegiate Baseball Lineup’s Division II Top 30 preseason poll.

Armstrong is among six Peach Belt Conference schools that are ranked in the preseason baseball polls.

The Pirates also come into the season picked to finish fifth in the Peach Belt preseason poll announced on Jan.27. Armstrong received a total of 77 points and was picked behind preseason No. 1 Francis Marion (119), Columbus State (102), Georgia College (95), and UNC Pembroke (91).

Softball

The Armstrong Atlantic State University softball team also gets its 2012 season underway this weekend with a pair of doubleheaders, Feb. 4 vs. Florida Tech and Feb. 5 vs. Lynn.

Armstrong looks to improve upon what was an outstanding 2011 season, going 31-14 overall 13-7 in the PBC and advancing to the NCAA Championships for the fifth time in the past six seasons.

The Pirates were picked to finish second in the Peach Belt Conference preseason poll. Armstrong received three first-place votes and 88 points total behind three-time defending PBC champion North Georgia, which received eight first-place votes and 98 points.

Head coach Ted Evans returns the majority of last year’s team, which was led by PBC Player of the Year April Jowers who led the PBC with a .497 batting average last year. In all, five All-Conference players from last season will be back for 2012 including catcher Ashley Buckett, outfielder Shelby Duff, third baseman Baillie Temples and pitcher Megan Barnwell.

Men’s Tennis

The Armstrong Atlantic State University men’s tennis team opens its 2012 spring season on Feb. 2, visiting No.18-ranked Saint Leo before traveling to No. 8-ranked Rollins on Feb. 3.

Armstrong went 26-1 last season and had their hopes dashed at returning to the DII national championship by defending national champ Barry in the round of 16.

This year’s Pirate men’s tennis squad returns four players from last year’s team, including Eudaldo Bonet, who finished the season ranked No. 1 in singles and earn ITA All-American honors, and Mikk Irdoja, who earned ITA All-American honors in singles and doubles and was ranked No. 6 in singles and No. 1 in doubles.

Women’s Golf

The Armstrong Atlantic State University women’s golf team begins the Spring portion of its season this week.

The last time the Pirates were in action was back on Oct. 24-25 at the Flagler College Fall Slam in St. Augustine, Fla. at the Marsh Creek Country Club, where Armstrong finished 10thout of a 20 team field.

This weekend Armstrong will be in action at Kiawah Island, S.C. for the Kiawah Island Intercollegiate held at the Cougar Point Golf Club on Feb. 4-5.
