SAVANNAH, Ga. - The AlphaGraphics Armstrong State Student-Athlete of the Month for January 2017 is redshirt freshman men's basketball player Corey Tillery.
AlphaGraphics and the Armstrong State University athletic department are teaming up again this year to honor one student-athlete each month that best represents the Pirates' drive to succeed on the field and in the classroom. The Pirates have won the Peach Belt Conference Commissioner's Cup four out of the last five years while 58% of our student-athletes carried a GPA of 3.0 or better last year. This kind of success can not happen without the efforts of our outstanding student-athletes.
Tillery is the first Armstrong State student-athlete to earn back-to-back honors as the Douglas County HS product averaged an outstanding 23.2 points per game for men's basketball in January. The Peach Belt Conference's leading three-point shooter, Corey hit 47-of-95 threes in January (49.5 percent) and led the Pirates to an 86-79 win over first-place Augusta on January 25th, hitting 10-of-13 threes in the game.
He was named the Peach Belt Conference's men's basketball Player of the Week on January 30th and as of today, ranks seventh in NCAA Division II in three-point baskets made. Tillery has four regular season games remaining and is just five threes shy of the single-season record of 91 threes, set by Phil Clark in 1991-92.
